The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Who is the Father?

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity! We celebrate who God is: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. 3 persons and 1 God.

Last week we celebrated the Holy Spirit and next week we will celebrate Corpus Christi, and during the whole year, we have several opportunities to get to know more closely the Son. Therefore this week I think it is important to put our attention on the Father. Who is the Father?

“Philip said to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” (Jn 14:8) Truly that is all we want! In the most intimate part of our heart, we have the desire to know God! But it is very interesting, how Jesus replies to the request: “Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves.” (Jn 14:9-11). Jesus is clarifying that his whole life has been a manifestation of who the Father is. As we get to know Jesus we get to know the Father more. Jesus is the face of the Father! In Jesus, all points to the Father! In today’s Gospel, we see how Jesus is even surprised of the love that the Father has for us. That is why he uses the word ‘so’ in the very famous John 3:16 "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life."

We have a loving Father, who is forming us, according to the heart of his Son, and we get to know Him, as we get to know the Son more. This is a very deep mystery, as deep as the mystery of the Holy Trinity, where three persons are one God! This is the space to contemplate and open our hearts to what goes beyond us. In gratitude we receive SO much love!

Have a blessed Trinity Sunday!
