Second Sunday of Lent, 2/28
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain after His resurrection. During this trip, Jesus is transfigured -- His clothes become a dazzling white. Elijah and Moses appear beside Him as well. Then a voice came from above saying, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” As if anyone needed more proof that He was indeed the Son of God after all of His miracles and rising from the dead, this is a clear message from God the Father Himself.
In an everyday sense, this gospel reading reminds me of how often we forget who Christ is. It makes me reflect on all the times I’ve had powerful experiences in my faith, confirming that Christ is God -- and yet, a few months later found myself wondering if He’s really there. I think we all go through these ups and downs in our faith. Times where we’re on fire for God, full of zeal and conviction of Who He is. And then times where we’re confused, lost, and questioning whether God even exists. Oftentimes we wonder where God is when we go through times of suffering and surely, this past year has been a time where many of us have been wondering where God was in all of this.
But this gospel reading speaks to us in these times of confusion and doubt. God’s voice echoes out, “This is my Son…..listen to him!” It’s a reminder that we are not alone and that even in these times of suffering, Christ is who He said He is. God reminds us to specifically listen to His son. This is so important to remember in our prayer lives. So often when we’re suffering, we shoot up prayer requests, pleading and begging for whatever we need. We forget to sit in silence with Christ. We forget to listen. We don’t allow ourselves to hear Him and transform us through His message.
This Lenten season, let’s take time to, 1. Truly believe Christ is who He said He is, and 2. Listen to Him in the silence of our hearts. Perhaps this Easter season, we will experience a transfiguration of our own.
