The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, 11/21

Dear Friends,

I don't know about you but this Gospel left me on the edge of my seat - everything in me was waiting to hear those infamous words of Pontius Pilate: " What is truth?" - I love that question and that line in Scripture. And yet - today's Gospel ends right before we hear these words. It's like the opposite of a cliffhanger! We know those words are coming so why does the Gospel reading end at verse 37?

As I sit with this question, I wonder if today's message is not "what is the Truth God wants us to hear?" but rather "Are we listening?". The last words of today's Gospel read: "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice". Yes, the Truth is important - but perhaps more importantly, are we listening? Do you have time set apart in your day, set aside intentionally to listen to God's voice? Are you cultivating a culture of interior silence and receptivity?

I also encourage you to ask yourself what does "listening" mean to you? What does it look like? I don't believe that it is a completely passive behavior. Think of your friends or family members who are good listeners. They most likely ask good questions and maintain a posture of attention (eye contact, nodding, etc). Do we do this with God? Are we physically oriented toward God in our prayer? Do we ask questions and do we wait for a response?

Discerning what God is telling us can be very challenging, confusing, difficult and discouraging at times. Today, we are instructed to take the first step and just "listen". For me personally, listening to God often just means resting in His love. Sitting in His presence and knowing that He loves me beyond measure. What happens for you when you listen to God's voice?

God bless,

Amy
